I read this way back in the early 70s and always wanted to read it again.
A guy for whatever reason is out in the middle of the night and interrupts an alien spacecraft sucking up water from a local lake.
In their haste to get away, the aliens cut off a piece of their water hose with a hatch door and the guy gets it.
The rest of the book involves the aliens chasing him all over the world trying to get the piece of hose back.
He finally gives them the hose minus a small piece which just pisses them off even worse.
