All Wa-Wa Sells Ethanol-free Gas?
Years ago, MTBE was added to gas to increase octane. But because of gasoline spills, MTBE was poisoning the earth, so out went MTBE, which was replaced with 10% alcohol. So what are these stations with alcohol free gas using to replace the alcohol? Certainly not MTBE. And what effects will the new magic additive have, good, & bad? GARY.
MTBE or methyl-tertiary-butyl-ether was blended with gasoline to meet the requirements of renewable fuels (alcohol) mandated by government regulation. The MTBE encapsulated the methanol so that it didn't have the propensity to absorb moisture which lead to stalling, hard starting, driveability problems, and other issues, such as fuel system corrosion, especially with carburetted vehicles.N4KVE wrote: ↑Thu Oct 17, 2019 6:44 pm Years ago, MTBE was added to gas to increase octane. Gasoline is a mixture of various hydrocarbons which can be refined and blended to a very high octane rating without adding alcohols. Straight gas would be cheaper than alcohol blends if there were no tax credits, subsidy's and other incentives paid to the fuel industry and farmers by the government. Adding ethanol to gasoline is really a false economy that exists because of the alcohol and corn lobby.

Gary is correct...so is gforester.
The corn lobby took advantage of the mtbe "crisis ", right place, right time.

So since the alcohol is out, but can’t go back to MTBE, what chemical is added to the gas to replace the alcohol? GARY.
Nothing is added to replace the MTBE. The fuel is likely blended with more iso-octane or naptha to get a higher pump octane number. Gasoline does not need alcohol to reach any desired octane rating.
