Mentally take the next steps. Consider "Problem, reaction, solution."
Shooting in an area. Police are "helpless".
Public: "Doooooooo something."
Solution: Triangulating sound sensors and software.
Ultimately, they'll cross index that with gun ownership records, carry permits, etc. and show up at your door. "We heard." "Our software determined." "We're searching your house." If you object, they'll take you into custody and search the house, confiscating any weapon they find "for testing."
Paranoid or far-fetched? The way things are going, I don't think so. Look at the current "red-flag" laws in Florida and other states. The confiscation can be done by anonymous accusation, rubber stamped by a judge, without you even being aware. Think that a "great new law enforcement tool" won't have an even louder voice? It's objective technology, it's "official".
Always think a few moves ahead. If one is wrong, not much lost. As a fundamental, you don';t know for sure until it happens, then it's too late.
