BUT, if your neighbor ever uses that gun in self-defense, and they ask where he bought it.
Sure, if he is willing to lie for you, nothing happens. But the longer the law is in effect, the less likely that will happen. As for the next year or so, they can simply say, I got it before the law. But eventually that does not work.
I wonder how many people who used a gun in self defense were questioned as to where they bought it?

I've never heard of of it, its never been depicted on TV or in movies, its never come up on the news that reported a self defense incident, I've read hundreds of true crime books and never seen the subject come up.

The two times I had to present a gun in my defense, the questioning never came within miles of where I bought the gun.

DW and his gas station partner weren't asked where they bought their guns.

Three different arfcom members and more than one at Glocktalk were involved in shootings and posted lengthy and comprehensive stories of the shootings and their aftermath including police interviews without mentioning a thing about being asked where their guns were purchased.

As long as were delving down into fantasy here lets not limit it to self defense what about being stopped on the street with a gun?

Wouldn't place of purchase be just as big a question at a speed trap, fender bender or DUI checkpoint?

My buddy recovered his Star after it was used in a suicide and no one asked him where he bought it.

So maybe, just maybe you're stretching things here just a little?

Seems like the support for FFL laws and other restrictions on the second amendment passed way back in the 60’s and even earlier sure wasn’t a good idea for liberty.
This is what ALWAYS what happens when government marries private industry.
Apparently, American citizens are no different than any other citizens of fascist/socialist/communist countries.
It’s our turn on the rack, and historians will simply add yet ANOTHER chapter to the annals of failed authoritarian governments.
The time to fight this was missed loooong ago. The camel that got its nose under the tent should have been shot when it entered camp.
I’m channeling the 1860’s again. Don’t laugh, I can hear history rhyming...

TC6969.

No, most won't ask that, now, It may be added to the checklist but, more likely as an earlier poster said, ineffectiveness of the new law will be "proof" that actual registration will have to be enacted, <wait for it> ............... For the children!

Ahh, yes...the invocation of our progeny to justify more government oversight. Classic!

Movies and TV, does not make your point, and you have never seen the phrase "...which he legally owed..." in a story about someone defending their life!! Because I sure have. Which means that LE determined the legal ownership of the gun--not stolen, not found on the side of the road. I bet some questions were asked. Never heard of a gun being held in evidence after a shooting? Don't think they checked the gun to see if it was stolen? To see if it was legal? I have a friend who is a FFL. The ATF contacts him and comes by to verify who purchased a gun when it is used in a shooting--if they think it was stolen.
Once you must have a background check to legally own a gun, that would then be part of the criteria for determining legal ownership. Oh at first there will be no record, so no proof. And how long do you think it will take them to change that? WE MUST HAVE PROOF that the transfer was legal!
I remember when women were fighting to get into the work force back in the late 70s--forcing their way into some good old boy clubs and groups, and a lot of males were grousing that it would change the work environment. The Feminists all poo pooed the idea, saying it was just the good old boy trying to keep them out-the work force environment was not going to change. I reminded of that every time I read a story about sexual harassment. I have no doubt that the good old boys were did not want things to change, but that does change the fact that they were dead on about how the work environment was changed.
You can believe what you like, but I have been around long enough see how things progress. I think you are stretching your trust in the government "just a little."

Our government is powerful enough to provide everything they think we need...
That is a very bad situation.

As far as enforceability I am willing to be there will be a lot of undercover work going on in Nevada. Sell a gun w/o the check, you go to jail and loose all your guns... I think it will have a larger "quiet" impact than what most are thinking, just like Red Flag laws (any idea how many guns have been confiscated in Florida already?). Regardless its tyranny plain and simple.
