When one mentions Caruso and "Rigoletto", can't leave out Amelita Galli Curci. Beyond opera, there is the "Bel Canto" era, which sadly is gone forever. The Philistines have taken over, and are trying to grind further.
Galli-Curci, now there's a name that conjures up a memory. When I first came to this country a long time ago I stayed for a short while with an elderly widowed uncle in Jackson Heights, NY. Most nights we'd eat at the corner diner, and there was this one woman customer with the loudest voice you ever heard. When she spoke, they could hear her in New Jersey. We'd enter the diner and if we heard this woman's voice my uncle would invariably say: "Galli-Curci's here tonight. Whatever you do, don't ask her for an encore."

Seriously, check out Youtube for Nadine Sierra. There's a complete Rigoletto on it, with modern dress. The role of Rigoletto is sung by Leo Nucci, and he and Nadine Sierra make a terrific father-daughter pairing, especially in the Vendetta duet which ends the second act.

. . . .As for selecting "Nessun Dorma," I think they did that because it would be one of the very few arias that the modern day "AGT voting audience" would recognize, given the popularity of Pavaroti's cover. and hitting that one "Vincera" high note probably sealed it for her.
I never realised just how popular Nessun Dorma had become among female singers. Aretha Franklin, Sarah Brightman, Marie Osmond have all sung it, plus many, many more. Okay, I admit it . . . I live in the past.

Funny, I was at a Billy Joel concert a couple months ago and his multi-talented guitarist/vocals, Michael DelGuidice, sang Nessun Dorma to give Billy Joel a little rest. He was amazing and received a standing ovation from the entire audience. Billy even joked and said "I guess that makes me the second best singer on stage".
