Think pre-crime data collection, tector.
They (governments) are gathering evidence today in search of crime tomorrow. This is a full reversal of the principle of due process where the evidence follows the crime.
Not good for liberty, here or anywhere.
Guys, collecting Amazon delivery info tells you nothing--other than you order from Amazon. They would have to warrant/subpoena Amazon to get more--and if they are at that stage, you are already in their sights. So the Amazon dithering is tin foil hat shit.

Now, certainly package tracking could be useful for other things. They government was clocking hydroponics dealers back in the day, to find growers. So in the brief interval while weed is still illegal here in this dumb state, that could happen.

Or, back in the day, people used to buy versious edgy books on full auto conversions, explosives, etc. Publishers like Loompanics, etc.,--it would have been interesting for the feds to track THEIR packages. Of course those books were often sold at gun shows, so anybody who didn't buy them, cash, in person, deserved their fate. Now all that info is just on the internet, where you might be tracked as well.

By the way Bob's Newsstand here in FTL still has such books (last I knew), so if you want a cash purchase on an old school book on such things, come on down!

But Amazon--give it up man.

If it doesn't cover the packages, then it can't be a really good system in re: its original intent (i.e. help scan for terrorist/anthrax activity, etc.).
You need to read what the program covers. It's not a see all program. And most anthrax cases involved letter sized envelopes not large packages.

"Users receive email notifications containing grayscale images of the exterior, address side of incoming letter-sized mailpieces that are arriving soon. These images are also accessible on the Informed Delivery dashboard at informeddelivery.usps.com. (Images of larger mail, such as catalogues or magazines, are only provided if the mailer conducts a synchronized digital marketing campaign.) For items with USPS Tracking®, users will be able to view delivery status of packages, provide USPS Delivery Instructions™, manage their notifications, and schedule redelivery from the dashboard.

The only packages it covers are USPS packages with tracking added to the package and then you have to go to your USPS account dashboard and sign in to view the info. You only get a notice something is being delivered. They already have your info when tracking was added to the package.

Really, everyone should read everything about this before making assumptions and posting.

Well, it does tell how much you buy, how often you buy and (for 3rd party drop shipments) from whom you buy. And, in the case of branded boxing (e.g. large electronics, TVs, say, boxes from "Federal Ammunition...." etc.), it can also indicate what you buy. One of the things some NJ Div. of Taxation agents would do to fish for people buying too much "Internet merch" (thus, avoid paying sales tax and not paying their "Use tax on out of state purchases") would be to go through cardboard recycling bins in the hope of finding boxes with shipping labels on them. If they find a concentration of boxes with labels at a given address, that address gets targeted and warrants will ensue.

It's not a tin foil op.... It's just simple common sense and takes very little effort on our part, and it just might save one from being "fished." That said, if the USPS is scanning (or ever does scan) packages, It would defeat our effort to make the pkgs. anonymous by the time they're recycled.

Moreover, govt. snooping isn't the only concern. Thieves can also scan those recycled boxes to learn what might be at one's address for "the taking."

You only get to see images of letters when you opt into their database sharing program. But they do say that they image ALL mail, including packages, that come through their system.

If you think the NSA doesn't have a secret feed of what everyone buys on Amazon, you're deluding yourself.

If anybody is on the radar of the NSA, they are done.

It is like people telling me they use a VPN. OK, if you are hiding from the MPAA or RIAA, that is handy.

If you are trying to hide from the NSA--LOL.

They don't worry about the outside of the box, I'm sure they can access the actual order database.
