Thank you Flame Red. If anyone wants to read a fantastic book which surpasses any movie, go to you library and read this - it goes so much further in important background:

Since the last Apollo moon mission NASA has not had the capability to go further than a near Earth orbit. Sadly no human has been in 'deep space' since then. The shuttles were stretching it to go 200 miles above.
Better?

Sorry - I thought that your previous comment was in reference to space travel since Apollo 8.

It was/is an amazing accomplishment. It is sad to think some people are rewriting history to change the reason we went there. Not to derail the subject, but it is sad to hear younger people talk about the reasons why we went and others that say it never happened.

There's no reason for humans to go to deep space anytime soon, nothing out there.
Cold war theatrics, but we did go. Had we not, the Soviets would have it broadcast on the AP.

Sadly, interest is low.
Remember; over half of the US population was not even alive during the Apollo days; to them, its ancient history.

Man will in time leave Earth, but it will be to make a "Buck", not to "Explore".
Asteroid mining is the future, why mine the Earth, when mineral wealth is out their just waiting to be collected.

It is still difficult, dangerous and costly to send humans into space. Wait awhile for our technology to advance, and then it might make sense to go beyond earth orbit. Meanwhile unmanned flights can continue to do research beyond our immediate vicinity, MUCH cheaper.
