(CNN) — A Wisconsin firefighter is in critical condition after a loaded firearm inside a burning building discharged and struck him, according to the fire department.

Justin Frederickson, a firefighter with the Cornell Area Fire Department, was operating on a hose line outside of a fire in the Township of Willard on Feb. 19 when a loaded firearm inside the burning building suddenly discharged. The bullet traveled through the wall of the building and hit him in the abdomen, Fire Chief Dennis Klass said in a news release.

“The loaded firearm discharged due to heat conditions caused by the fire, not by the intentional actions of a person,” Klass said.

Frederickson was transported to a nearby hospital, then airlifted to Mayo Hospital in Eau Claire, according to the release. He underwent two surgeries and has a third scheduled.

As of Thursday, Frederickson is still listed in critical condition, Cornell Area Fire Department assistant chief Matt Boulding told CNN.

“Please keep Justin’s fiancée, his family, and the Cornell and Sheldon Fire Department’s in your prayers,” Klass said.

Well that certainly sucks!
Interesting none the less.

Hopefully the guy makes out ok! First I've ever heard of a round in a gun going off due to heat and hurting someone!

Over 50 years ago while I was still in Dade County, I was a volunteer Ambulance Attendant working with the Red Cross. Twice I was involved with a firearm going off in a fire, that struck someone.
First one was a house trailer fire, the gun discharged and it hit a firefighter in the leg, that was believed to be a 30-30 lever action. The wound was not bad, as the bullet penetrated a couple walls before it hit the firefighter, the bullet was very distorted and hit with little energy.
The second was a car on fire after a wreck on the Palmetto Expressway. This one also hit a firefighter, but this time in the butt. This one was a 32 revolver, and by time the bullet went through the dash and the passenger side door, the lead bullet was very flattened and again it hit with low energy.
I knew this firefighter, and that is where he picked up the nickname "Butt Shot".
The funniest gun shot wound incident I ever responded to was at a engine rebuilding service in the very southern part of Hialeah. The owner of the business was leaving the business for the day after locking up. He had placed a 1911 in his right back pocket of his jeans, and when he slid his ass into the pickup truck seat he felt the gun, and reached behind him to remove the gun. The hammer must of snagged in the seat and was cocked, and he likely pulled the trigger as he grabbed the pistol to remove it from the back pocket, and the gun discharged. The 230 grain FMJ carved a gash in his right butt cheek, that was 6 inches long by a half inch wide and 3/8 of a inch deep. Thus like the song said: "Super Mucho Macho Man, got to Shoot Yourself in the Ass Man". It bleed like crazy, and I bet that left one hell of a scar.

Never seen a cook off? This is why you pull mags and empty chambers before walking in front of the line to check targets, etc. If you shoot enough full auto eventually you see a cook off and it's always enlightening.

Watched a guy balance his expensive HK conversion after firing a few mags only to have it cook a round and fall to the deck. Very, hard deck...very unhappy expensive gun owner.
