"A group of scientists say black Americans are scared to use hammers needed for geology because of fear they will be killed by police.

Top geologists condemned systemic white supremacy in the field of geoscience, which concerns the study of earth and rocks, in a manifesto published at the scientific journal Nature Communications. The academics claim black people are hesitant to take up geology because they fear being killed while handling basic geology tools as a result of the stereotype associated with black people "holding objects."

"As the geosciences strive to be more accessible, the community must recognize that BIPOC and other marginalized geoscientists are not always safe in geoscience spaces," the article said. "Holding objects (e.g., a rock hammer) has been viewed as ‘suspicious' and, continues to be, used as a reason to call the police on Black people, which can lead to the death of Black individuals, entirely because of racial profiling and an unjustified fear of Black people."

I guess people that come out of their cars when the police make a traffic stop in the hood and have a hammer in their hands should be no be treated as a threat at all. As I recall there was an incident where the perp was "dispatched" properly last year when he came at the cops with a hammer and of course BLM wanted the cop's head handed to them on a plate.

All I can say I do not know how any sane person would sign up to be a police officer or enlist in our military with the Kommies-in-charge. I think that is their goal.

As far back as the mid-80s I have personally witnessed programs sponsored by the Geological Society of America and local universities to encourage interest in the geosciences by students from under-represented demographics. These programs appear to have had a measure of success. Of all of the reasons that our local Geology Alumni Society has ever heard about why someone of any race/color/ethnicity chose not to pursue a geology degree, it has never had anything to do with rock hammers

Also, the vast majority of geologists almost never use their rock hammers at work - it's usually on field trips and vacations. The premise that someone could be at risk of harm from police because they were holding a rock hammer is ludicrous.
