Post by Slartibartfast »

verdict being read in the Corey Jones shooting. the ex
WPB cop Nouman Raja was found guilty of manslaughter
and attempted first degree murder.

The attempted first degree murder charges were for the additional shots that were fired and did not hit. They deemed that the actual death was manslaughter, however the continuance in firing shots brought it up to first degree murder. The thing is, they cannot tell when the actual death shot was fired, however it doesnt actually matter.

Along the lines of shooting to stop the threat and continuing to shoot him(at him) after he died.
Picture the old movie scene where a bad guy kills another guy, then walks up and emptied his mag on the body. There's a line there between self defense and some real anger issues...or murder. Evidently, the jury identified that line.

Although Raja had told investigators previously that he had called 9-1-1 before shooting Jones, the audio recording of the emergency call showed the shots had been fired 33 seconds before Raja dialed. The recording also showed that Raja never identified himself to Jones as a police officer. In a State Attorney's Office report released on January 17, 2017, prosecutors state that Officer Raja lied to investigators, giving an account of events that contradicted the evidence.
A lot harder to get away with BS in this day and age.

I bet he ends up with 25-30. That is about average for murders less then first degree here.

you never know, ex Chicago officer Jason Van Dyke was just sentenced in january
to 81 months after being convicted of second-degree murder and 16 counts of
aggravated battery.

although i did read the Illinois attorney general has asked the Illinois supreme
court to review what prosecutors consider to be too lenient a sentence.
