I would go with #1 as long as the barrel is not a hunting contour(skinny), and the twist is 9 or faster. Free float stock a plus.

#3 would be next for same reason. #1 & #3 then #2 in that order. Only because there is a ton of aftermarket support for the 700 action. 788 not so much.

I have shot for years and still do, 75gr and heavier bullets in 600yd F-class matches. Perfect combo for a young shooter to learn this game.

DB,
What I meant for support was aftermarket addons.

For the R700 action, you can get triggers, stocks, detachable mag setups, pre fit barrels, scope rails, and on and on.

R788, the aftermarket selection not on the same level.

Even for your Tikka there is not the same level of aftermarket upgrades as there is the the R700.

I'm not a disiplined marksman by any stretch, but: I'd go with #3.
Bull barrel, 24" (your younging may handle better) and...pretty wood stock.
He'd have to be extra careful protecting the wood and it's not free floating though.
#1's tacticool artificial stock" (I'm old skool) will absorb more abuse.

So, the general concensus is that you can't go wrong with 1 or 3..the 700s
If they're about the same price....then Dad, let the young man decide!!!!
How cool would that be??

I would have bought #3.
Make it into an M40 clone like mine.
