Could you sew a patch of similar cloth over the rip/tear?

I took an old military cot to a local seamstress. She sewed a patch over the tear for $5.

I've patched several tents using 5200 silicone with duct tape inside and out to keep it in place until it sets. The tent must be set up and stay in a dry place for at least 24 hours. Prep area well with alcohol. It has worked very well.
I would sew it up and hit it with several coats of flex seal and move on to the next leak.
3M weatherstrip adhesive is your friend.
