Help with HR-218

Post by Nowhere Mon »

I am a retired LEO from Wisconsin. I've been able to renew my HR-218 in Tampa and Lee County in the past but everything is shut down due to the virus. Is anyone aware of any agencies currently offering it?

(HR-218 is a Federal law that allows qualified retired police officers to carry a concealed firearm nationwide.)

I would suggest contacting your County Sheriff's office to see it your HR-218 is automatically extended?
I have no information on it... I was just looking to see if anything was online for your assistance.

Do you have a CWL?

Waco,

Yes, I have a CWL. I also had a HR-218 but it expired in May.

Joel,

To the best of my knowledge, Collier and Lee Counties have suspended HR-218's due to the virus. I will double check with both of them.

As far as automatically extending, it's a Federal law and not covered by state law. It would literally take an "Act of Congress".

If you have a CWL, what is significant about the HR218 card with it?

There are states that do not accept a Florida CWL. HR 218 permits a retired LEO to carry nationwide. The downside is it needs to be renewed yearly which is normally not a problem. A pandemic is the exception.

Oh, I'm familiar with the program. When I used to work at Markham Park we would get guys that had CWLs and only travel to states with reciprocity, yet they got their card every year. We used to charge $75 and for some of those guys, it was a waste. Others (like the NY travelers), it was gold.

We normally travel yearly to Wisconsin. My FL CWP permit only works to the Illinois border. After that. I relied on my HR 218 card.
