How to Verify Military Service

Post by Slartibartfast »

is there an easy way to verify someone was in the military, nothing specific
just years served and what branch ?
A common mistake that people make when trying to design something completely foolproof is to underestimate the ingenuity of complete fools !

Easy? Ask for their DD-214.

Not so easy: https://militarybenefits.info/check-mil ... e-records/

a friend claims their father is a WWII combat vet but he was born
6/1931 and WWII was from 9/1939-9/1945. even if he only
served during the last year he would have been 14 which seems
unlikely.

Does your friend suck at math?

Yep that’s possible.
On August 15, 1942, Calvin Graham was sworn into the Navy. He was twelve years, four months and twelve days old, the youngest individual to enlist in the U.S. military since the Civil War and the youngest member of the U.S. military during WWII. Calvin was just one there were a few of them that snuck in. The kids back then had balls Not Participation prizes

My grandfather joined at 17, turned 18 on the boat headed for the Philippines.

You can search the national archives by name here.

https://aad.archives.gov/aad/free-text- ... q=&as_woq=

My grandfather is listed as serving as an Enlisted Philippines Scout

Results for enlistment show in the below group.
World War II Army Enlistment Records, created, 6/1/2002 - 9/30/2002, documenting the period ca. 1938 - 1946 - XXXXXXXX

My Grandfather was proudly tossed out of the Army twice for lying about his age. He was 15 when he enlisted in 1929, and made it about 7 months before they tossed his out. In 1943, he went back in. At 30, with 4 kids and married, he was too old as an enlistee. He made it 10 months. It sure made sorting out his funeral arrangements interesting with the VA. No birth certificate and three baptismal certificates all signed by the same priest.
