Is it possible to hunt big games using AR 15?

Post by richard33 »

Mostly big game hunters prefer centerfires like Ruger American Rifle, Winchester renegade etc. Why AR 15 is not in big game hunting lists. Is there any Customization ideas out there for an AR 15 build to make it for big game hunting?

In something other than 5.56 it can be a great big game gun. I would suggest an AR10 platform though and build something in 6.5 creedmoor or another larger caliber.

I'm confident I can take down anything on this continent with my AR-10. 7.62x51 going through critical organs tends to make things dead quickly. With my AR-15 in 5.56, there's a lot of game I wouldn't engage except as a last recourse.

There are some states that won't allow you to hunt deer with any firearm that is less than .24 caliber

Colorado, Connecticut, Illinois, Iowa, Massachusetts, Virginia, Ohio, New Jersey, Washington, and West Virginia require larger bullets to be used to hunt game - or shotguns only for deer.

Yet another reason to consider 6.5 Grendel, on top of the excellent BC.

I've successfully hunted deer and hogs with my AR pistol and carbines in .223/5.56 caliber without any problem.
For larger game like elk or moose an AR-10 in .308 Winchester should work just fine.

Also there ARE single shot uppers for the AR15 platform chambered in various .30 cal loadings, should the individuals budget not allow for buying the AR10 platform, etc.
