Look at that last bit, "While in the process of that review, additional information has come to light. Despite the termination, we will continue to investigate as appropriate".
Something else is afoot and CNN is trying to not only distance themselves but get ahead of whatever story is about to break. Possibly a criminal charge?

If you’ve ever watched his show, these’s a minute or two where they both chat split screen as one hands the show off to the other. The night of Cuomo’s last show during the handoff, it seems they both knew this was his last show. GARY
