Apparently, he was suffering from Colon Cancer, and it caught up to him.

Rest In Peace, you provided a lot of entertainment to a lot of folks. Perhaps you even inspired many to play soccer in the US.

I remember watching him play in 1970 World Cup...on a 12" black and white TV with poor reception.
I didn't know anything about the game but everybody was very excited.
I learned about him from older kids next day at school. Since that time I've always associated Brazil with soccer (football) and soccer with Pele.
