Question on individual shipping handgun within state

Post by ireman412 »

When I was here ten years ago you could ship a handgun to an individual within the state by UPS overnight with a copy of the buyer's license. Does this still hold true?

Legally, yes. Good luck getting UPS or FEDEX to accept a non-FFL shipment. They won't.

I have an account with both UPS and Fedex, where I can create my own labels and just drop it off.

I’ve done it a few times. I get a copy of their DL, & send it to the address on the DL. Sent on the brown truck, & since it’s going instate, it will get there overnight. GARY

Since 2022 even FFLs need to have a special contract with UPS to ship firearms and certain parts.

I would recommend against shipping undeclared, unless you are sending to a trusted friend within the state, and don't mind eating the loss if package disappears. If you file a claim, UPS will deny it and will likely cancel your account for breaking terms of service. Might as well skip the overnight option as well, while you at it.

If someone from FGT wants you to ship your generic G19/G17 unseen, at the very best you priced it way below market and can easily sell it for that amount locally. More likely option would be a traditional scam, overpaying by a fake certified check or other means and asking for a partial refund. If you really unlucky, in theory, you can end up with a fake id, e-payment from a hacked account, and shipment that is rerouted north by the recipient. So potentially no money, no gun, and badges at the door.

This is quite a change, then. I recall when SIG-Sauer was doing it's upgrade/repair program for the P320. I qualified, and they set it up through Fedex. They sent me the label. I slapped it on the box (a Fedex box, actually) and sent it on its way. It got there. They did the upgrade and then sent it back to me directly (no FFL) via Fedex again. I got it back.

I guess SIG-Sauer can't do that anymore, then.

At the federal level, it is legal to ship legally owned firearm from a person to an FFL anywhere, or for an FFL to return a firearm or replacement after repair directly to a person.

UPS/FedEx might still be allowing such shipments from a person to an FFL, if an FFL initiates it and acts as a shipper by providing you the label. They would not accept it from you directly.

If a manufacturer is sending/receiving a repair/warranty from a firearm owner, it can be shipped direct. No FFL needed.
