Helena in western NC and what should make the feds real nervous

Post by lilwoody »

I have been making pilgrimages 3 to 4 times a year to the western portion of Mitchell County (Buladean to be precise) in NC for the last 20 year. I've own a cabin there for 12 years. The people born and bred there are the most independent, rugged and friendly (until crossed) people I have known. Most are the defination or daylight to dark working folks.
My dear friend there even adopted my family into theirs. We watch their sons grow into men and for the first dozen years of their boys lives they though my sons were thir cousins. We have graduated from "our friends from Florida" to the folks that have the cabin up on Beans Creek. We were even part of their the family reunions now.
Now to the point. This storm utterly devastated their area. Like hurricane Andrew and Katrina combined and if the death toll will ever be released honestly will far exceed both. Federal agencies have yet to pay a visit to the area. None of the alphabet news agencies are doing interviews of meemaw up the hollar like they did with Shenequia outside the Superdome in New Orleans. No graphic picture of the bodies of a mother and her child that were swept into a tree like the blanket covered body outside the Superdome.
Nope theres not throngs of people wondering around waiting for some one to pick them up, dust them off and powder their backside. Nope these locals have done enormous amounts of work in a very short span of time and I dont mean simply chain sawing and dragging trees out of the road. That was done in the first two days they had the a path road cleared on the roads from Spruce Pine to Erwin Tennessee. They are using their own loaders, track hoes, dozers, dump trucks and other equipment to restore washed out roads, reroute roads, make bypasses for washed out bridges. Making due with what they have and making the best of it.
The help is pouring from eastern Tennessee but not fro the state or the feds but from churchs, fraternal organizations, Joe and Jane Smith individuals by the truck loads. And this is showing just how little their goverment thinks of their demographic and how pathetic their government is. It's why the utter destruction in those western counties is not 24/7/365 front page news.
If it were it would show exactly how completely biased our government is to it everyday hard working people. And this must be kept as quiet as possible. You know there's a election coming up.
Oh and these western counties vote 80 to 90+% the wrong way.

The only possible silver lining.
“Democracy is a pathetic belief in the collective wisdom of individual ignorance.”

One question I have is who benefits from the inability for them to find a polling place to cast a vote? Certainly can’t vote by mail when there’s no mailbox or post office.
