Wow that does look better. No back story at all, like how long it sat there rusting.?? How did the inside of the barrel look after all that rusting??

The bore seemed to be relatively untouched. The story I got was that there was a fire....the sprinkler system went off...and then this was thrown in a box or something for a long time and neglected. Not sure how I want to finish this out, if it's even salvageable. Looks roached. But if not this particular one, I want to do a Black Tele decked out in Gold trim. Classy. We'll see.

Thanks for the update.. Water always seems to damage more then the actual fire. Nice save.

My first thread worthy (I hope) project.
My son and I picked up a pair of single stack AKs from a fellow board member a few days ago. Wanting to have the ability to run standard capacity mags, we bought these with the intent on converting them to double stack mag capable.
Double Stack versus Single Stack magwells:
I did some online searches and talked with NorincoKid (THANK YOU!!) a few times for advice, methods, and encouragement, I made the decision to go ahead. I downloaded a AK flat template and glued it to the receiver so I'd have a guide. I double checked the size of what a normal opening would be and found my smallest AK mage to use for test fit.
After staring at the first one for hours working up the courage to hack via Dremel, I went to town on it. After the first plunge with a cut off wheel, there wasn't any looking back. I stayed inside the lines of my template for a rough cut and switched to a sanding barrel attachment to smooth and straighten out my cuts.
TBH, it's kinda hard to screw up. You just have to open it up enough for the mag to fit through. The receiver doesn't hold the mags in. Instead it relies of the pivot and latch for front to back tightness. Side to side, the mags are held in mostly by the dimples in the receiver and two small, flat rails. These receivers don't have dimples. Instead, there's two little rails welded inside each side of the receiver. One protrudes out further than the other. I thought that I'd find that the rails sticking out the hold the mags and the other would align double stack mags. As it turned out I had to grind both of these rails down evenly fit mags. These had to be precise. Witness marks were my friend here. Taking too much off will leave you with wobbly mags. Not enough will make the mags hard to seat. I got it right, but if I work up the courage to go hacking again, one day I will weld in a rounded bar up against the remaining rails to help smooth out mag inserting even more.
Even with the single stack bolt, it hand cycled good with live and dummy rounds. I finished things off with some cold blue.
The plan was to test fire the first rifle before hacking on the second one. The pain in my hand was pretty bad the morning I had cleared to shoot so I bailed on going to the range.
Being an impatient, bored person, I went ahead and hacked up the other rifle before test firing the first using the same methodology. We now have either two parts kits or two runners. Hopefully, I will get to the range (likely Saddle Creek in Lakeland) on Friday or Saturday to find out which it is.

Best of luck. The labor itself looks good, done as well as can be by hand.
"If" for some reason you somehow murdered them and they no longer work, as much as it sucks, receivers are cheap. Or at least, they can be. They can always be "transitioned
