So I want to keep my AR pistol with 10 1/2" barrel for self/home defense. Any recommendation of what ammo to use? I don't think FMJ.ball ammo like M193 or M855 would be idea as penetration would be excessive and I don't expect yawl or break up with M193 ammo from slower velocity. Maybe 45-50gr JHP varmint ammo is the way to go?
What is your recommendation and why?

I carry gold dots in my EDC, they're in use by a lot of law enforcement, etc. Pretty much the go to man stopper.

Hornady Critical Defense is what I have loaded. I figure expansion is the best way to slow down a bullet. Personally I choose the shotgun in the house.
Critical Defense Ammunition is:
Unaffected by thick and heavy clothing, including denim and leather
Loaded with bullets that deliver superior controlled expansion and large, deep wound cavities over a wide range of velocities
Loaded with clean burning and efficient propellants that reduce recoil in lightweight handguns, and perform consistently at all temperatures
Exhibits minimal muzzle flash protect night vision
Feeds reliably
Silver nickel plating prevents corrosion and is easily visible in low light situations
Bullets are custom designed for individual loads
Effective, consistent, reliable self-defense ammunition
This ammunition was designed by Hornady to expand every single time. This ammunition is new production, non-corrosive, in boxer primed, reloadable brass cases
Made In United States of America

Rug, google Nosler Defense 64gr Bonded...I have a case of it if you need some.
I've found no reason to not use Mk262 or its clones in any defensive role.

Don't use an AR pistol for home defense. Firing one in close quarters without hearing protection will make it clear why.

Yeah, ask my buddy about that.
He said the sound wave and the immediate pressure change almost knocked him unconscious and he was pretty much useless for 15-20 seconds after that.
I can’t think name of it right now but some muzzle breaks throw the concussion forward

Flaming pigs do that fine,
But why not shoot 300BO suppressed, problem solved, especi6if you are shooting an AR pistol with an 8 inch barrel.
