Picked up a Ruger American in 270 from grab a gun for 275. This will be strictly for a deer/hog gun. I have a bushnell
6-24x40 that will be going on it for now. Its over kill but its just sitting in the safe so might as well put it to use for now.
Whats everyones take on this rifle and what would be a decent scope for it. Max shoot will be 200/300 yards. Thanks in advance.

Decent rifle for what you want it for. Agreed that scope is way overkill.
Scopewise, decent choices available in the 1-8x, 2-7x or 3-9x range. Leupold, Nikon, Vortex to name a few.
Let us know how it works out.

I have never shot the Ruger American but couple people I know who have them have all been satisfied with their rifle and couple people have told me it is very accurate compared to other similar bolt action hunting rifles. I maybe interested in a compact model in future in .223/5.56 just for fun range rifle. IMHO For all around use it's hard to beat 3-9X power scope for general use and the bonus is that it's usually the cheapest item on any scope line as they sell it the most. In Florida most shots are not that far so 2-7X power scope is ideal and it's smaller than higher power scope. 1-6 or 7 or 8X power scope would be very versatile but a good quality scope in that power range is very pricy.
You may not be of my flesh and blood, but you are of my heart and soul.
Do not mistaken my kindness for weakness.

Natchez has some sales rolling, you should take a look. I'd be looking for something like a 2.5-10 something if I was looking to glass a 270 for FL.

Ended up putting the bushnell on to finish this hunting season. Took it to okeechobee and was very happy with the results. I dont look for moa type results but it shot 1"moa at 100 yards. I left it 1" high and can shoot to 200 with a 2" drop.
Is that Ruger the one with a threaded barrel?

No, the predetor model are the ones that come threaded.
I have one in 30-06 and it is absolutely dead nuts accurate to 300 yards. Has a very good trigger. Killed a bunch of animals with it.
