I just moved into this new house in April of 1999. You mean I am supposed to drain the water heater? After only 19 1/2 years??? It still works fine.
Mine was 19 years old as well, and working fine. But I just replaced it. I didn't want it to break down at 2am some night. They are only $350 bucks and anyone can replace them easily.

To be honest - I think once, maybe twice in 16 years.
Replaced 2 - 80's this year once one starting leaking due to rust at bottom.
Pretty sure old ones were AO Smith - new ones are Rheem.

If you have water with a lot of calcium in it, common with our limestone in Florida, then drain annually. If not there's no need to. Thanks to the big water softener I installed the few times i tried draining the water was clear.
