On one hand an 8 Inch screw sticking out was a little much. On the other hand falling on it and impaling it into your brain is a kind of fantastic one off. Suing just makes money for the attorney's. I would not turn down a free or highly discounted left hand bolt action long gun. Lol.
First, sorry to hear of your ordeal and best wishes on your recovery.

Second, I am not a big fan of lawsuits but in this case, its rather a no-brainer. I would sue:

1. The gun store
2. The maker of the display unit
3. The person who assembled the display
4. The venue

I am not an attorney, but I would recommend at least consulting with one right away. Things need to be obtained and preserved like videos, witness statements, etc.

On a side matter if you have a life insurance policy, look there for payment as well. As morbid as it sounds, there may be a schedule of payouts for non death incidents like yours.

Keep us updated.

I'm glad someone said it. As someone who just went through comparable, I wish there was some insurance to seek compensation from in my case. My bills are already over $200k and I'm at least a year away from being "normal" again. I'd expect yours to be similar, if not more. Yes, I have great overlapping health insurance coverage, but it doesn't cover everything. Even my ADD plan hasn't been as advertised leaving huge holes in the expected payouts. Store owners carry insurance for situations like yours. Consult an attorney.
