Anyone want to go "halfsies" on the Smart Car?
- I can explain it to you, but I can't understand it for you... -
Having worked in this industry for the last 10 years I can say that most individuals will get ripped off.
Many buyers at these auctions have no idea of what they are looking at. If it looks good it must be good.
Example: A 68 Mustang Shelby convertible owned by Charlie Sheen with his signature and Caroll Shelby's on the glove box door. The guy paid enormous money brought it in and I inspected it. 429 Engine is not original and a dog, missing ac, underbody rust, leaks every where, convertible top folded down had mouse holes chewed into top.
Example: Old Rolls Royce non running. Can buy for 15k running really nice for the vintage. Guy bought it. had it delivered. Total rust under body, engine has no oil pressure, brakes are rusted solid as is everything else. Interior is trashed. At least 70k to fix to running condition.
Example: 70 Barracuda convertible. Distance looks nice paint and interior. Brough it into the shop to put on lift and when it came off the ground the back and front started to bend down. Stopped. Took a large mirror looked underneath totaly rusted out. Looked like it had been left in a salt water bath. Just paid 70k at auction. Put it back on the ground and I told him to take it directly to the scrap yard.
Buyer beware. If you don't know what your looking at and don't know how to figure out vin tags and body tags, hire somebody to look at the car.

After watching Motor Trend shows like "Iron Resurrection", "Chasing Classic Cars" and "Fantom Works", I lost all interest buying an older project car.
